This book is an excellent source for RVA history from its founding in 1906 to the early 1970s, as well as “the heartwarming story” of the family that has had such an impact on the school. By the early 1970s, the school board chose 500 as the top enrollment, with about a fourth being elementary students. Enrollment increased very slowly (my class of 1955 had five graduates, including two Downings) until Kenya’s independence in 1963, when it began accepting Kenyans in addition to primarily missionary children. President Theodore Roosevelt (a few months after leaving office) laid the cornerstone of RVA’s main building in 1909. Shaffer, MD, RVA student (1930s), and much-admired teacher (1951-55). She earned a doctorate in educational psychology and made good use of it, including in retirement with professional visits to RVA. Mary was born in Kenya, grew up at Kijabe among some of the families described, attended RVA from first grade through part of ninth, and taught there and in California. This is the heartwarming story of their love and commitment to their mission.Īfter reading “Missy Fundi” about her family, friends suggested to Mary Andersen Honer that she write a book about the Downing family (starting with Lee and Blanche Downing, who arrived in Kenya in 1901 along with the founder of Rift Valley Academy). Both men's wives shared in the teaching and responsibilities of RVA which included homemaking for children living in dormitories, cooking, laundry, nursing, and other duties that were gracefully taken on as the need arose. He found himself "filling in" for ten years, during which time he taught various classes and generally ran the school. The younger brother, Kenneth, was asked to fill in for a year while Herbert was on furlough. His eldest son, Herbert, served as principal of the school for many years where he used his varied talents for teaching, building, and administration. He was known for his life of prayer and faithful leadership in Africa Inland Mission. Lee Harper Downing, the patriarch of the family, led the way with his gift of teaching Latin and the Bible. Their assignment to run Rift Valley Academy resulted in a multi-generational involvement with the myriad and diverse roles necessary to produce a successful school, and one that has met American accreditation standards, and gained recognition worldwide for quality and uniqueness. ![]() The Downing Legacy is the story of a family dedicated to serving God as missionaries in Kenya. ![]()
